I’m a senior citizen and I have never before been afraid of actually losing my country. Yes Nixon, Ronnie, George W and Cheney were all horrible but I never feared for our democracy. Who are these people behind what he’s doing? Because you know he doesn’t have the intelligence to think of this stuff by himself. He’s proven himself to be barely functionally illiterate and has the attention span of a housefly. Who are these people behind people steering this ship?

The Heritage Foundation and the Federalist Society.

Exactly. And it's not a secret, even if the media has worked assiduously to make it one.

Study history. See rise of Hitler, Stalin. Deport, nullify intelligentia, flame fear and hatred of scapegoats who caused…., have threats of and actual violence to show their power. Read Orwell’s “1984” which was written in 1948-9 to put the authoritarian blueprint and execution tactics into a powerful sci-fi novel format. It is not rocket science. There just have to be be enough powerful individuals (GOP Party, Federalist Society, FOX etc.} and enough money (Musk, Zuckerburg, Besos, Altmans, weak-kneed uber-wealthy, companies, media, who have a stake in the dictatorship) to pull it off. It is not magic or need steering once it starts off.

Mark, since 2017, I have been fighting back, staying informed, learning lots more about courts, laws, norms, rules, ethics, Oath of Office, lying, "doublespeak," essentially how similar Nazi techniques and trump/GOP/SCOTUS/Federalist Society are to each other. Orwell's "1984" was on my mind and on my lips back in 2017. The formulas are simple and effective if you have a major political party, uber-wealthy dark money, media, corrupted, unethical snail courts/justice, white collar crime laws stating there are no victims so lax enforcement and many settlements, immunity of POTUS from prosecution during administration and now immunity from our laws after leaving office for "official acts?"

I volunteered, always vote, donate to candidates outside my BLUE state, been "in it" since 2017. All the "Town Criers," "Chicken Littles," in the US and world will not stop a POTUS, GOP, Congress filibuster vote, confirmation vote, reversal of SCOTUS precedents, a stop to gerrymandering, a rising maternal death rate because abortions are illegal in some states, and normal health care is denied females until death is imminant etc.

trump/GOP/Oligarchs/Federalist Society/MAGA have no shame or conscience to appeal to. They have won by being this way-why change?

Impeachments didn't work, court cases didn't work, Mueller investigation didn't work and DOJ refused to indict trump for interference with the Mueller investigation and justice. Taxes went to Durham investigation, J6 Congressional Investigation, FBI/DOJ cases for stolen secret docs-obstruction of justice again and conspiracy, instigation of seditious, insurrection 1/6/2021. ALL our taxes to be drawn out, neutered by 2024 Election and SCOTUS immunity for the KING's official acts in and out of office.

This is the reason many have tuned out. WE are now fried from reacting to each new assault. We saw this coming and took non-violent actions. We did all the right things. INSANITY is repeating the same actions over and over again and expecting different results. There is no shame, no laws, no check or balance, no recourse to filibustering of 41 Senators, no protection from dictators in what WE were doing. NEW TACTICS! NEW LEADERSHIP for non-violent revolution like Gandhi, MLK,

Icelandic females and many philosophers advocate.

Pay closer attention to economic power. USians are really, really bad at this -- it's one reason we've never had a labor party worthy of the name. Go back to the Reagan administration tax cuts and union-busting (the now-famous Lewis Powell memo of 1971 is helpful here), then advance to the rise of ALEC and the Citizens United decision (2010). By 2017, the horse had escaped the barn and, yes, chasing a loose horse is exhausting. If only the barn had been secure enough to keep the horse contained.

So true. And here are two groups I'm especially angry at:

1. the armchair/keyboard activists constantly complaining Democrats aren't doing enough and should be engaging, apparently, in the same hateful, lawless tactics Republicans are always pushing.

2. a certain group of mostly white male politicians, both self-styled "progressives" and "centrists," nattering on about how the Democrats lost because they didn't have a "message" that appealed to the "working class." I have so much to say and so much rage about this because it is so clear that they mean "blue collar white men," and what they are really saying without using the word is that Democrats are too "woke," and should not be so blatant about urging justice, rights and opportunity for women, people of color, LGBTQ+ people and anyone else not a straight white male. As Trump parties with billionaires, they (supposed on our side) say we're appearing too "elitist."

Bernie Sanders is the worst. Apparently for these folks, only white men are truly "working class," but not the army of Black women who are teachers, principals, social workers, nurses, doctors, home health care workers, beauticians, small business owners and more. And appealing to them hurts the fee fees of all those white men.

And here's the thing of it, right here in Ohio: Our senate candidate (Sherrod Brown) talked about NOTHING but things to help all working people, and when his opponent (the execrable Bernie Moreno) made his main campaign message "trans people are coming to molest your daughter," Sherrod didn't respond (because then HE would've been accused of making the campaign all about trans people). And Moreno's "message" worked. He offered nothing for working people; he didn't need to. Hate sold. There was literally nothing Sherrod could've done to push back on this. What's your response to THAT, Bernie Sanders?

Hi, I'm in the Bluest state in nation, VT. I wrote postcards/letters to voters in Ohio and for Sherrod Brown particularly. I hear what you say about the defining of working class so carefully so as not to mention females, LGBTQ, immigrants as producers of taxes, GDP and equal in all respects to freedoms, perks of white males. Sorry, Sherrod didn't win and my other swing state contacts seemed futile in retrospect. I am ready for direct non-violent resistance like advocated by MLK, Gandhi, Icelandic women (look that one up-amazing effects) . Carry on with passion.

Thanks for mentioning the stiffening of spines in the MSM. As I've mentioned elsewhere, constant attacks on them actually SUPPORT the narrative that all news is fake, which is exactly what trump wants.

I've noticed that increase in spine and am glad I did not cancel the NYT and WaPo (I disliked bothesidesism but appreciated many stories on other topics, particularly the Gaza War. There was a lot of background on the plight of Palestinians for years under Israeli control, as well as the plight of Arab [second class] citizens of Israel itself. I didn't just "stay for the crosswords." In fact, I don't do crosswords.

A person on Bluesky accused me of "simping for mainstream media." I responded: "The masses get their information from mass media. We must reward decent media and punish indecent media. If you've read my newsletter, you know I encourage support for independent media. But we need to reach as many people as possible. We won't defeat fascism handing out leaflets on the corner."

exactly. It is lovely to say we must grown an alternative to MSM, as with Substack or other publications. But the readers of those are self selected. The average Joe(sephine) keeps looking at what has always been looked at. And if it isn't Fox, it probably IS a form of MSM.

I will never forgive The NY Times for creating the overarching campaign narrative of 2016: Her Emails©. And they backed that up with rigged coverage of the Clinton Foundation, downplaying stories they'd covered for 40 years about Trump (USA Today did the primary coverage of Trump bankrupting Atlantic City, NYT barely mentioned it) and running more front-page stories about the emails in the 9 days before the election (after Comey's huge violation of protocol) than they ran about ALL policy issues combined in the previous 69. (This was all in the Columbia Journalism Review, which studied the coverage.) They also ran a story with a slant that appeared to say that the idea of Russian interference in that campaign was debunked, when it was actually just not confirmed yet. Some think they were angry that Mother Jones broke the story and needed to save face. Then there were the worshipful profile of Trump ornaments Hope Hicks and Ivanka. Do you think if Hillary won and made Chelsea a "senior advisor" (with a doctorate in foreign policy from Oxford, she's actually qualified!) they would've done that? No, it would've been a week of merciless attacks until Hillary backtracked.

thanks Mark - it is vital that we hear encouraging posts like this one - we know we have dark days ahead, but we are determined to fight - our efforts will be imperfect, and the legacy media is no exception - I have written several critical comments to the NYTimes, CNN, Atlantic when I feel they are sending a mixed message, but have decided not to write them off as they get it right part of the time - and reading the comments to their misleading articles is very encouraging - 99% are in the vein of "we are not buying your article, and here is why..." I am gaining more faith in the growing sophistication and discernment of the reading public as a result. Keep informing us with the good as well as the bad!

I also believe that there are more good people than bad people and hopefully they are waking up. Nothing like a mad man doing insane and harmful things to get people's attention. I have nothing but praise for anyone and everyone standing up to trump. Tragically, on balance, corp media is still kowtowing to trump far more than they are resisting or truth telling. However, I do believe their influence is waining. And I believe the influence of alternative real news outlets is growing. Your frightening but honest statement that we could lose our country is sobering. But it is also a call to action. You have also pointed to real reasons to hope. This is excellent journalism.

Democrats are disturbing in their weakness, confusion, and need to please maga. Dems might gain more respect from disinterested voters if they put up a fight and not cower in the corner afraid of taking on the bullies. Dems discussing casserole recipes to bring to the next battle is embarrassing and discouraging. They try to please more than they try to win.

Oh, and I believe the corporate, legacy media along with cult like law promoted a trump victory and admired his BS, lies, and love of Hannibal Lecter in order to get more clicks then and after the election. If Harris was elected, what would media do besides coddle trump from afar. Law enforcement would then say dems are weak on crime. It would have been the same old false equivalence BS as the four years under Biden.

Jim Acosta is great, but CNN doesn't like him being tough on the fascists, so he may have other ideas on where to work after CNN demoted him to the midnight shift. You still have the both sides nonsense from supposed journalists like Tapper, WaPo, and NYT, although a disparaging piece might slip by the editors because they are trying to contact trump to see if an- different piece is acceptable to the dictator. It will take more than some occasional reality from corporate, legacy media for moe to trust them again. Been burned too many times.

Better a little movement by media towards democracy than none at all, but they have a long way to go to regain any respectability from any respectable person.

The fact that Republicans voted for Hegseth (except for 3) means his other nominees will go through without a murmur. Hegseth was the worst of the bunch with very bad repercussions for women and other minorities in the Armed Services. When Republicans can put an alcoholic and alleged rapist who cannot be faithful to his word in the Department of Defense, how are the rest of Trumps choices worse?

Let's remember Bezos has no control over the Post's editorial decisions, and it would be a major scandal if he did. This is Journalism 101.

Expand full comment

What? Is meant to be tongue-in-cheek?

Expand full comment

I assume so. This claim of separation between editorial and business is performative and false. We've seen this over and over at my local daily The Cleveland Plain Dealer, in so many areas, ranging from candidate endorsements to firing the classical music critic because he displeased the orchestra's parent organization (the publisher sat on the board) to burying a story about the Cleveland Museum of Art's director who was let go for .... well, it's complex but sexual abuse was involved (publisher also sat on that board). We KNOW Bezos killed the Harris endorsement — he's said so.

Expand full comment

Again, it would be a scandal if the owner got involved in Plain Dealer editorial decisions. Anyone in journalism knows this, it would be unethical and called out by media pros. Got anything? Or are these your opinions?

As for Bezos, respectfully, you are flat-out wrong. He had nothing to do with the decision. Well after the decision was made and published, he was quoted as approving. But this is just an owner giving his thumbs-up to management, something owners do all the time. This is not unethical.

An owner cannot get involved in editorial decisions. Again, this textbook stuff.

When a well-known journalism standard appears "tongue-in-cheek", it must mean you weren't aware. If you value your sources, you might ask why they kept you in the dark.

The only time we KNOW he interfered was the endorsement. We don't know if he had any part in that cartoon decision. WaPo, even before the election, did have some nastygrams about trump. But liberal focus was on the bothsides part.

The Washington Post, which I initially subscribed to as an antidote to the awful NY Times after it made the 2016 campaign entirely about Her Emails©, has been sliding to the right for about 4 years. I've been documenting it. Most galling were a pair of adoring articles about anti-choice women, one who ran a "crisis pregnancy center," the other who was proposing what was essentially a cult compound for young pregnant women. Both articles lavished praise on these women and spun them as saviors and heroines for poor women in difficult situations. On at least one of them (maybe both, I'm not sure), they killed comments, I'm sure because they knew they'd get a lot of angry pushback. These articles were propaganda for the anti-choice movement.

Don't even get me started on their coverage of Glenn Youngkin's gubernatorial campaign, so slanted that the Youngkin campaign should have had to claim it as a donation in kind, or its four years of "will inflation rise/gas prices go up/the next job report after this great one be bad and hurt Biden" coverage — absolutely everything was seen through the lens for how it could hurt Biden. And then they laughably ran an article recently ago asking why voters din't understand how much Biden had done to help the economy. My comment was "If there are mirrors at the WaPo, try looking in one."

Expand full comment

the question I was addressing was whether BEZOS ordered all this. He certainly hired a right-leaning editor but that hasn't entirely stopped criticism of trump.

Were the pieces about the anti-choice women articles or op-eds? I generally don't mind op-eds--they hone my BS detecting skills if I bother to read them.
