The other issue is that the media is owned by a few individuals, who lean to the right

& whose fault is that? Who coined the phrase, “if it bleeds it leads?”

We have a corporate media who continues to ignore the direct and imminent threat of a Republican party devoted to turning America into a fascist country

They refuse to acknowledge the stakes and only obsessed with the polls and continued Trump insanity

Why won't you answer my question? Do you want the government running the media?

In many ways the government does run the media because the media depends on government sources, press handouts, and carefully controlled press conferences for much of its news. Reporters are loathe to put negative spins on stories because they fear being uninvited to the cocktail parties, small luncheons and private gatherings where sources regularly whisper "off the record" stories to the lickspittles who are regular party animals. Add to this the lack of real digging because of media staff shortages and low budgets and you have a perfect storm for media not doing much watch-dogging. To be sure, government funding of the BBC hasn't harmed its excellent and fair reporting. bbc America is, hands-down, the best.

It isn’t just misinformation. It’s ignorance. No one taught them what the data means, how to interpret the data and when to panic. Many people have no clue about any of it because they don’t even have a Christmas Club account. And they ate often too embarrassed to ask. The MSM also makes no attempt to educate.

Paul Krugman has repeatedly pointed out that polls consistently show that Americans think their own financial situations are good and that their local economies are good but the economy of the country is terrible. That proves that, contrary to what journalists claim, people are not basing their negative impressions of our economy on their personal struggles. They almost certainly are getting that impression directly or indirectly from the media.

The idea that 2% is the ideal number for inflation is based on nothing. It’s a number that a New Zealand finance minister picked out of thin air back in 1989. We know that annd inflation rate close to zero is dangerous because it puts the economy at risk of a dangerous deflationary spiral. That is much worse for an economy than a spike in inflation and much harder to stop. Yet the media acts like 2% means no inflation but 3% is a serious problem based on nothing but an arbitrary standard. The media should be explaining these facts repeatedly to ensure the public has the basic understanding necessary to be informed citizens.

Also Ms Rampell’s assertion that the public prefers negative stories is a self-fulfilling prophecy that is not supported by data. This study conducted in 6 major television markets showed that people not only prefer stories about solutions to problems, those kinds of stories encouraged them to watch more news, to discuss those stories with others and to get involved.

I would be surprised to find that the same is not true of print news stories. The adoption of “if it bleeds it leads” journalism was a way to cut costs not to better inform the public.

Listening to the stock market falling these last few days, and thinking about the windfall profits by corporations since the pandemic, it's infuriating to think many people don't see inflation as something imposed upon us by those corporations.

Do not be ridiculous

No one is asking for government control of media except Republicans

But over 90% of all media are owned by GOP billionaires & they often direct their people to give favorable articles to Trump & GOP while ignoring or minimizing Dem accomplishments

Under oath Michael Cohen testified about how they used the media for support

Every administration uses the media for support. President Obama's foreign policy chief regularly derided the media as easy to manipulate. New York Times Investigative reporter James Risen called the Obama administration "The greatest enemy of press freedom in a generation" and further noted that the mistreatment of the media by the Trump administration was actually just a continuation of that prosecuted by the Obama administration.

The media should be repeatedly explaining facts to ensure the public has the basic understanding necessary to be informed citizens. And public officials, especially, Democratic officials, should constantly inform as well (praising the virtues of Bidenomics remains a glaring failure). Trump acolytes used identical messages on the verdict that most of us can repeat by memory. Not so with D views of the verdict, or of the economy for that matter.

Ms. Rampell’s assertion that the public prefers negative stories may bea self-fulfilling prophecy that is not supported by data. The adoption of "if it bleeds, it leads" journalism still makes its ways into living rooms of this country. People do not typically talk to each other in grocery aisles, school meetings, or at work about how great the stock market is doing or how low inflation is compared to Trump era. Talk to your neighbors and see if they mention what is good at work or schools, or if they focus on what is wrong.

Elected officials often struggle to talk about positive developments. Journalism schools do not adequately address how to handle Trump and his lies. The Democratic Party has not made it easy to understand how Biden's programs have affected local communities. While there are websites that provide this information, Democratic leaders need to highlight them more effectively.

Jacob and Beschloss should continue to be critical of the media for not changing on how to deal with lies and misinformation. Similarly, they should be critical of Journalism schools for still struggling to do with this 'new reality' (what a misnomer) in the Trump world.

And political leaders have also failed on national messaging on what works. I ask what is the equivalent of MAGA acronym to illustrate positives of the Biden administration?

IN some ways, Mark, you and Steven are misinformed about the economy. The Administration has next to nothing to do with the state of the economy. Presidents always take credit for good economic numbers and deflect blame for negative numbers. If you look at the performance of the stock market it has continued to grow, over all, regardless of who is in the Oval Office., since Franklin Roosevelt's time in the White House. Media pundits have long used conjunctive qualifiers when writing columns. They hedge their predilections so they are safe no matter what happens. If the media were more responsible they would qualify any news, positive or negative, with a true caveat.

This is frustrating because it is impossible to combat the gaslighting about the economy from Trump and his sycophants, not to mention Fox news. The MAGAts can't handle the truth. I wrote on this same topic yesterday:
