I wrote to the major networks months ago about their failure to present the facts without hiding behind the pretense of “objectivity to both sides”. Not that I expected them to alter their coverage— they care primarily about their bottom line and adhere to some dubious, antiquated policy of deference to the powers that be. My primary focus was their failure to cover the increasing number of protests occurring nationwide. They’re still failing to do this, which means they are failing to do the important work of journalism. The public relies on the media to show us what’s going on— not just sensationalist and selectively curated news of “riots”, but the active, widespread and growing response to the lawlessness, incompetence and cruelty of the current administration.

IMO Mr. Moran was looking for a way out. The response vindicates his need to escape.

ABC's capitulation to Trump is a sickening disgrace. We have, in the network, another example of a corporation placing immediate expedience over morality and the commitment to truth. Is it any wonder, when the mainstream press has abdicated its responsibilities to real journalism, that we are now on the verge of becoming a full-blown dictatorship? Shame on the press for its complicity!

Stephen Miller is such a caricature of an S.S. officer that he would make Goebbels blush. But when as warped a character as this is appointed as a "White House Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy" and is encouraged to implement policies that are designed to cause untold suffering and misery across our country, it is absolutely incumbent on our press to investigate this character's background and expose who he truly is. Stephen Miller was a kid who used to eat dried glue off his arm when he was a student at Franklin Elementary School in Santa Monica. His already warped nature got totally bent out of shape when his family had to move out of their ritzy home (albeit into a somewhat less ritzy one) because his rich father, who had substantial real-estate holdings, ran into deep financial trouble as a result of damage to his rental properties during the Northridge earthquake in 1994. Miller's nascent racism metastasized at Santa Monica High School where he openly expressed his hatred of the custodial staff and fellow students who were Latino or from immigrant backgrounds. Should this guy be working in the White House shaping national policy?

By the way, as a result of Stephen Miller's prodding, there are now 4,000 national guardsmen and 700 marines on the streets of Los Angeles. Where is the outrage in the mainstream press at this abhorrence?

ABC has bent the knee and capitulated to the little fellow. ABC loss is MeidasTouch win. Terry Moran will now be able to speak truths. Its rather sad most of the main stream media has cowered to a despot.

I have expressed my horror over this to ABC although to what end I’m not sure. This man told the truth. Shame on you ABC. You are cowards.

"Performative objectivity" needs to become an oft-used hashtag when describing the media.

I respectfully cry bullshit, Mark and Steven, drawing on my 40 years in journalism (mostly, yes, at The New York Times - but before it was so "lamestream). The tweet was a train wreck of hate mongering, using the same methods Trump and Miller use. This line blew me away: “You can see this just by looking at him because you can see that his hatreds are his spiritual nourishment.” Exactly what Miller does with tattoos and criminality and Trump did deriding a disabled reporter based on his visible disabilities. Terry could have made his points and stayed within reasonably journalistic boundaries, but for whatever reason didn't. I wrote on this early yesterday, noting he'd be out at PBS or any other influential outlet. Sure ABC has every reason to kowtow. But this was about journalism standards at its core. I asked my readers to imagine Rachel Maddow speaking those words. I can't. In my post I expressed hope he'd activate his Substack account. I'm thrilled he did so. Like you and Krugman and others, he can now express whatever he wants, however he wants. Here's my piece: After an X-cruciating Post, ABC's Terry Moran is Launching his Substack Journey https://revkin.substack.com/p/not-journalism-you-can-see-this-just
