Yes! I've already contacted the DNC's Ken Martin to support the idea and create a 'shadow cabinet.' I read many excellent substacks, but a declared group of Dems, including Chris Murphy (but not all Congresspeople) could do it well. I still support the idea.

Canadian here -- an Opposition or Shadow Cabinet works brilliantly, especially when there is much to oppose in what the ruling party is up to.

Yes to a shadow cabinet, but even more important is a single LEADER. People who believe in democracy and justice are now the RESISTANCE to a fascist coup, not to put too fine a point on it. ALL resistance movements in history have had a leader - MLK, Mandela, Aung San Suu Kyi, etc etc. Yes press conferences and law suits are important, but there is no real strategy to stopping the coup and restoring power to Congress and the courts. Who knows how this will play out? A popular rebellion? A military intervention? Democrats need a leader to unite all Americans who support the Constitution. And, he/she was needed yesterday. Not in 2028; it is not even guaranteed there will be Congressional elections in 2026, or that the outcome would make any difference. 2028 primaries are now pie in the sky. Who exactly is leading the CHARGE? From what I can see, no one.

This is a very good idea and needs to happen yesterday! Can't we combine some of you wonderful independent journalists into some kind of single rebuttal machine?

I think the motto of an organized truth campaign should be “no one believes you’re stupid, but you are being lied to.” And I’ve always thought that each major crises deserves a task force, with all the other crises fitting in those buckets; that the task forces can focus on disseminating the truth concisely to the people. Agreeing, yes, an organized response. Traditional paperwork and policy is not an effective way or countering and active (decades long) assault on the truth. The republican haves (power and money) are the liars and have all shown their asses. The republican haves nots who rely on their lies to believe they are taken care of need constant exposure to the truth to develop any seed of unhitching from those lies.

I have been wondering about the feasibility and possible effectiveness of mobilizing a national information war that is initially modeled after the organization of a national political campaign or some other type of national campaign based on an urgent public interest issue. The leadership would be people with outstanding communication skills, I.e. possibly political campaign experience or PR experience. Fund raising would be needed. I'm hoping for daily interaction with the many segments of the population, including the Trump base...TV commercials with interviews of people representing different issues, billboards, rallies with celebrities, phone calls, postcard writing, education sessions at community centers. The Indivisible TRUTH BRIGADE has 6K members working to counter false information on social media. And many media outlets are doing a great job of exposing lies. BUT what populations are being reached? Do we know? Regardless of what happens in the courts or Congress, the lies and manipulation will continue. Such an info war, in addition to exposing lies as a way of manipulating people, could show the brutal impact of false information , and the ongoing actions which totally contradict promises made. We could show people from all walks of life, e.g. unions, minorities, immigrants, workers in different segments of the economy , experts in various fields, people who lost jobs because of trump and the SERVICES they provided (FDA, CDC, firefighters, FAA, FBI, DOJ, USAID, military, scientists, health care providers, etc.) politicians in various states re: impact of Trump defunding programs, views of people in Canada, Ukraine, and leaders in other countries. I believe that such a campaign needs to be viewed as neutral and objective, to achieve credibility with diverse groups of people. I'm concerned that the shadow cabinet concept would be viewed by many people as similar to an opposition political party, and that the same objectives can be accomplished without feeding into the current polarization associated with political parties. Excellent ideas. Why don't you guys coordinate this? Since it's your idea. Can't you contact Buttigieg and ask him to help?

The problem is this would be organized by Democrats. Which means it couldn't be organized. They would have to have a committee of all the different voices in the party, discuss what they're going to say and how they're going to say it, pick one from each identity group to speak, and then have it reviewed to ensure nobody is offended. And by that time it's dinner time. Rinse and repeat the next day.

Mark: I totally agree with your suggestion. I think many have suggested Pete Buttigieg to lead this shadow movement with a dedicated staff to help support and run it. But at this point, I am loath to see that we are gaining any ground at all with our resistance. Today Patel was approved for the FBI. This is flat out catastrophic for this country! Virtually *every* nominee that Trump has put forth has been approved, sometimes even with Democrats supporting them. I don't want to give in to thoughts of futility, but I am seriously questioning whether we are coming up with anything to stop this juggernaut. I would like to be disabused of this idea, but so far I see nothing that would lead me to believe we are gaining any ground at all. I remain hopeful but increasingly skeptical.

Absolutely correct! We need daily organized communication not this “scattered shot” approach.

I am wondering Mark, do you think a coalition of journalists such as yourself could directly connect with our Democratic leaders and ignite inspiration and a pragmatic informative managed set of projects going forward?

Immediately?

Thank you for your work.
