Corporate and most traditional media is broken beyond repair. Their mission is to spew corporate propaganda cannot be counted on to conduct unfiltered journalism. Corp/Legacy media's refusal to tell the truth, its normalization and sane washing of trump, its deliberate falsification of the news is criminal IMO. They are beyond hope and every effort should be made to steer news consumers away from them and toward independent media. Democracy cannot survive if they are allowed to control the narrative.
Independent media yes, but competent media ruled by journalistic ethics and a mission to get at what's really happening. Something missing completely from $$$ media.
These “mistakes,” it should be pointed out, do not get made in the opposite direction.
That said, while I don’t think there will ever be a level playing ground, a lot of our media stars are somewhat better than during Trump I or (shudder) the Iraq War. We all need to keep pointing these things out; they work to a degree.
I stopped subscribing to the Washington Post at the end of December, after trying to hang on for the sake of the competent reporters after Bezos squelched the Harris endorsement, due to these slanted headlines as well as the sloppy reporting that only got to the truth near the bottom of the article. I am less than satisfied with the PBS News Hour which has been too influenced of late by the once mainstream, now billionaire, media. Last week's Washington Week with the Atlantic, in which the panelists were attributing policy goals to the Trump Emoluments Tour of the Middle East, has left me wondering whether it is worth my continuing to give it thirty minutes a week of my time.
I am a retired English professor. With every student, from the freshman composition to the graduate level, I stressed clarity and precision in writing and the necessity of reading analytically and judging the evidence.
I find it painful to watch what has happened to print and media journalism. I considered subscribing to The New York Times, but I saw some similar sloppiness there. So, I put my money into select Substack subscriptions where accuracy is a virtue.
I dropped the NY Times after their godawful 2016 election coverage, compounded by the hiring of Bret Stephens (whose name just won't stick in my brain). My WaPo finally ran out last month; they're trying to woo me back with $1-a-month offers. No thanks.
As a news (and commentary) source, I highly recommend the Guardian, which I've been subscribing to for several years, both US and UK editions. Of course I subscribe to a bunch of excellent Substacks, most of which focus on a particular area of interest (law in general, the Supreme Court, electoral politics, foreign policy, civil rights, etc.), but it's a challenge to get "the big picture" -- how it all fits together -- from all these scattered sources.
NPR has been off my list for quite some time. Remember when Repubs were calling out news organizations for being liberal? I never thought that but they were bought and now they lie and distort. Good morning America.
The lazy and devious reportage is not just irresponsibility on the part of the press, it's downright complicity with the fascists in their march to dictatorship.
The heart of the problem, though, lies in the nexus between the corporate owners of our media and the regime.
Thank you for your incisive work, Mark Jacob, in calling out the lies.
Does everybody remember how then-first lady Michelle Obama was widely ridiculed by press and pundits for her initiatives toward making the U.S., especially kids, healthier? I do. Now they're fawning over RFK Jr. for "Make America Healthy Again." Appearances can be deceiving, but I'd rather take health advice from Michelle Obama than from RFK Jr.
Media, and commentators, and too many Americans, continue to normalize and sane-wash this incoherent and blathering jury-determined rapist, twice-impeached, 34X-convicted felon, and January 6 traitor (and all his MAGA Repub sycophants).
He is nothing but a wannabe mob boss, whose only strategy is self-enrichment and escape from criminal liability and accountability. As an example, the tariffs are nothing but an extortion racket so he can shake down CEOs, industries and countries, until they come hat in hand on bended knee to pay him protection money to "lift" the import sales taxes he's trying to force on everyday, working families.
We do a disservice to ourselves when we continue to:
a) platform him;
b) repeat/amplify what he says; and/or
c) try to rationalize, mock, call out its hypocrisy, or even (and especially) refute/negate
He uses racism, nativism, sexism and LGBTQ-hatred to distract/divide us, all so a wealthy, well-connected few (foremost himself), and price-gouging, climate-polluting corporations don't have to pay what they owe or be held accountable for putting profits over people, as they gut the program our taxes have paid for and deny life-saving healthcare and food from millions of children, seniors and veterans.
Thank you Mark for this log of media twisted titles and reporting misguiding our people.
The abhorrent actions being foisted upon us by the Fascist Crime Syndicate in power now are almost sidestepped with the dishonest way the media misuses their introductory titles.
When the media reacts this way they are complicit in the abhorrent actions perpetuated by those wishing to break our country.
I lay much of the blame at the feet of Democrats who speak like deputy assistant undersecretaries of the Agency for Gobbledygook. All they know how to do is speak about governmental process (Inflation Reduction Act) and not about benefits for the average American. Medicare for All polled great in Obama's first term so they came up with something called the Public Option which most Americans could describe as well as they can describe woke now.
It's journalists vocation and responsbility to break down what you call "Gobbledygook" and be clear about what it means for people. In public affairs, there are always winners and losers (or at least, costs). If the Journalists didn't do that, then it's not on Buttegieg or other elected officials to use their 15 seconds of air time to get it all out. And are Republicans better at explaining how Medicaid cuts will affect families and children? Really.
Having been a journalist for a number of years, I can tell you that journalists are not going to break down what they think an inarticulate politician was trying to say. in terms that readers or viewers can understand. Republicans don't give a damn how Medicaid cuts will affect families. The cruelty is the point.
Worst is yet to come. Donald "The Beast" Trump is building a wall once again. Colossal tariff wall that is the beginning of the end for the system of down. At first the beast will pull the plug out of the global economy. The worst financial crisis of human history will pull a swarm of the banks underwater and the bank run begins. Then the beast will collapse a mountain of debt shattering the backbone of the monetary system causing a systemic risk to realize. Finally the beast will cast American citizens into a system slavery under the name of Ronald Wilson Reagan, just to "honor his legacy" count the number. After the destruction a new world order will be established in the US. And the Golden Age begins from the ruins of the world wide collapse. All of the system slaves will love it. No more cash - just digital transactions. No more traditional criminal activity. No more tax evasion. No more transactions without the "all seeing eye". Outcasts will hate the world without freedom, hope and privacy. To cover up the mess and distract the public by smoke and mirrors, the beast will engage in a war with Iran. Lies and deceit, corruption and decay, dancing on the graves will continue. Until; Black hole sun, won't you come, won't you come... I want to play a game. Time has come to opt out of the empire of filth. Live or die...
Thank you Mark for continuing to point out the failings of our major media and their disinclination to provide truthful context around the political mayhem we currently endure. I can imagine it feels like yelling into the void at times, but it is vitally needed right now. Much appreciated!

May I add, "Me too." PBS, NPR, WAPO and the NY Times have all bent their "journalistic standards" to keep the White House and its crime lords happy.

The fascists are better at catchy terms, without a doubt.

Unfiltered like a gas bomb that spreads around the press room. Did you smell that? Better report it.
"Journalism is not the process of repeating whatever someone says." But it's very much a part of the process. It's called quoting.
