I agree they should cancel, but the fact they are not really shows how the media has failed in this time of Trump. Thank you for this article, and for independent media like you.

Nice piece.

Let's turn this into an action step, folks. Let's make this a petition, linking this piece and promising to drop subscriptions/boycott journalists who go. (Like business, military, etc., the media is one of the institutional pillars that uphold this regime and it's super effective to let them know we're paying attention and directly engage with them by withholding dollars, clicks, etc. Doing so is part of the active, peaceful resistance we need to create real change. It's a "next step" we can do in addition to the awesome No Kings protests.)

Good idea!

Yes, Media (Arts & Entertainment) is one of the pillars of the Seven Mountains Mandate. Denver Riggleman explains it in detail - https://substack.com/home/post/p-194108685.

It is the theological core of the New Apostolic Reformation — the NAR — a network of independent charismatic churches that scholars describe as the fastest-growing segment of Christianity globally.

Denver also explains it all in this video - https://denverriggleman.substack.com/p/with-orban-gone-will-trump-double?r=1n10rc&utm_medium=ios

No, I am anything but a conspiracy theorist!

I've always defended "reporter shows" because it's good for journalists and the people we cover to see each other as human -- to laugh together and realize that there's a lot of life beyond the stories that we (rightly) take so seriously. But you're really right on this, Mark. The time for these shows is past; they need to be seen as anachronisms like the huddle of reporters around FDR as he said, "Now, boys, here's the thing..." and proceeded to dictate their stories. I'm sad that this is today's reality. But some things are too evil to lay aside, even for a night, and a president's assault on the First Amendment and his daily attacks on honest journalism and journalists ought to disqualify him from the presumption of good will that goes along with humor. There's nothing funny about Donald Trump. You're right: this will be an embarrassment for everybody involved.

Thans, Rex. I liked this especially: "Some things are too evil to lay aside, even for a night."

I used to work in television news in DC for a long time and loved going the WHCD, but that was before the bullshit Trump era. If I was still working in DC, I definitely would not attend which is sad.

I think you're absolutely right; politicians should not attend the White House correspondents' dinner. I agree that they should call off this year's event.

Bridget Collins's avatar

They can wear the pins in the gaggle.

Cancel it now.

Keir Graff's avatar

Right on, Mark. Shameful that any journalist would attend.

Great idea to cancel it. They really should. Or disinvite trump. he's shown the media, even the toadies, nothing but disrespect.

Michelle Chlarson's avatar

Don’t cancel it. Sneak in a few acts: Amber Ruffin, Noah Trevor….a few others and let the dissing commence!

Gee, I hope the menu is tacos. TACO -Trump Always Chickens Out, They Always Chicken Out. Tacos for everyone!

Dennis Patterson's avatar

Then it’s not a dinner for correspondents. It’s a dinner for ass kissing sycophants and propagandists. They are ass kissers and he is an ass.

Yes, it should be canceled, not just this year but for good. But especially this year, with this president and the current state of morass in too much of the media. And I say that as a retired journalist.

I remember this vividly and that it was Maggie Haberman who wrote a tweet accusing the comedian of criticizing her Sanders’ looks when this in fact was a FUCKING metaphor, but I guess Ms. New York Times' MAGA (momi used to work for the Kutchners) doesn't know what a metaphor is. I will never forget the absurdity of all. "A memorable kerfuffle came in 2018 when Trump’s press secretary, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, attended and was mocked by comedian Michelle Wolf. Referring both to Sanders’ lies and her makeup, Wolf said the press secretary “burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye.”

I've been criticizing this for many years. I totally agree with everything you said. There are other ways to raise money for scholarships.
